5 Apps That Will Let You Watch Venus Pass The Sun Tonight
Venus passes in between the Earth and the sun twice every 120 years.
Last time was in 2004, and tonight it will happen again starting sometime around 6pm EST. Next time will be in 2117.
So you should go see it.
But don't go see it with your bare eyes, unless you want to never use them again.
Here are a few apps and sites with which you can observe the twice-in-a-lifetime event:
The Transit of Venus (free) app. It's by an organization called Astronomers without Borders. It uses your GPS location to tell you exactly when Venus will begin and end its transit. Here it is for iPhone, and there it is for Android. The same organization also has a web app with the same information and more.NASA will stream the transit live from its EDGE observatory in Mauna Kea, Hawaii.A multi-continent webcast will come courtesy of the Coca-Cola Space Science Center, which will take feeds from the Gobi Desert, the Australian outback, Georgia, and Utah.Or, you could do it the old fashion way with a pair of solar viewing glasses. Here's a good guide on where to find them.In the meantime, check out NASA's awesome footage of Venus's 2004 transit courtesy of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center on Flickr:

This Impressive Kickstarter Project Turns Your TV Into An Android Tablet
Chances are your TV at home has a free HDMI port or two. Pocket TV is aiming to to change that.
Pocket TV is a fully functioning micro-computer, roughly the size of your thumb. It runs the latest version of Android (Ice Cream Sandwich), much like today's latest smartphones, and essentially turns your TV into an Android tablet.
The Kickstarter project has already raised about $83,000 out of its $100,000 goal. With 33 days left, it seems like Pocket TV will happen.
Here's how it works:
Just plug Pocket TV into your set's HDMI port and you'll have access to all of Android's apps, games, social networks, etc.
This is certainly an option for someone who doesn't want to buy one of those new web-powered "smart TVs."

Color Psychology and How it Affects Your Site
As a designer, website owner, or marketer it is important to know how color affects your target audience. There are many factors that contributes to how someone perceives color. While some of these factors are uncontrollable as they are mentally controlled, there are some that we can control as designers.
Some of the outside factors that can affect color and how people perceive it are:
CultureReligionEnvironment (where the color is being used)Time PeriodTrendsWhen designing projects such as websites you need to keep the above in mind. Especially keep in mind the culture and religious meaning of color. Colors have different meaning in different cultures and religions, so knowing your target audience can be one of the key factors in the success or failure of your site.
Example:
The color green is usually tied to safety or money. However in France the color green is associated with criminality, it is also not a good color to use for product packaging.
Colors have different meaning in different parts of the world, while some have universal meanings, some do not. Investing a little time and research into your target market can give your site a major boost for very little work.
In this article I have provided some incite into colors. I have given examples to their
Common AssociationPositive and Negative Aspects of UsageCultural and Religious MeaningInteresting Information About the ColorPrimary ColorsRedRed is the most dominant color and will always draw your attention when it is present. This makes red a good color to use if you want to draw the attention of the viewer to or away from a design element.
Examples:
You want to highlight something on a website such as a price or buy button, a little well placed red will make it stand out.You designed a room and there is a small flaw you can not hide, you can use some strategically placed red elements to draw the attention away from the flaw.Color Association

This iPhone-Powered Guitar Looks Pretty Sweet
We just read about the gTar on Apple Insider and it's a pretty exciting prospect -- a fully functioning guitar that's powered by your iPhone.
Cosmetically it looks just like any electric guitar you've seen before, complete with real strings, but there's a cutaway section where you can insert your iPhone to start the gTar app and control the device.
The fretboard is packed with LEDs that light up to help teach you where to put your fingers to play various songs. And you can obviously play it as you would any guitar, using your iPhone to make effects and distortion.
Check out the video below to learn more. If you like it, head over to Kickstarter to throw the gTar team some cash so it can actually make the product.

This Video Shows An Awesome Application Of The Pebble Watch
We've written extensively about Pebble, the runaway Kickstarter success.
This video, which comes to us via Engadget, shows some of the potential for pairing Pebble with another Kickstarter hit called Twine, a Wi-Fi-connected sensor device that can wait for something to happen, then carries out an action.
In this case, Twine detects motion in a door when someone knocks, then sends a message to Pebble that says "Someone's at the door!"
All the more reason we can't wait for our Pebbles to arrive in September.

The Smartphone Wars: Who’s Winning So Far?
Where We Stand Now
As cell phone users make the full shift to smartphones, and the manufacturers vie for the larger share of that market, the war is fully on. Who’s winning at this point? The systems using Google’s Adroid operating system are presently the most ubiquitious, at 40% of the market in the United States. Apple’s iPhone has 28% of the market, and the famous and once prestigious Blackberry has fallen to only 19% of the market. (Luckily, Blackberry still has a very large worldwide presence, so its U.S. numbers don’t seem to be concerning it yet.)
But with the switchover occurring at such rapid rates, the big question is where new buyers will head. Manufacturers are also concerned about how loyal there existing customers will be as new features, available apps and more streamlined operating systems are added. Real gadget geeks are willing to switch phones like some of us switch socks.
What the Future Holds
Nielson, an opinion company, reports that about 30% of potential new buyers are considering Androids or iPhones, rather than Blackberrys. More bad news for Research in Motion. Further, they claim that surveying users who switch to new technologies quickly and easily tells them that Android is winning the war in that group. Forty percent of these

Get Ready For Malware On Your Android Device
The good news for Google is that they had success with their very first mobile operating system, Android. The bad news is that this same popularity is attracting the lower type of programmers, those who are correctly called “crackers”. Read on to get informed about what can happen if you have an Android device.
The Unseen World Of Malware And Rootkits
Would you think that someone from the other side of the world could take over control of your Android smartphone? It can happen. The code is already in some of the older Android smartphones. Would you believe that your carrier is installing code into your Android smartphone that allows them to track what you write in SMS text messages? What if you found out the same software was also tracking what phone numbers you were dialing and sending out the information to an “undisclosed” recipient? Well, do not be surprised.
Things Are Not Always What They Seem
The “Madden NFL 12″ download is actually an IRC bot that roots an Android device, taking over control of it. The second software, in reality a rootkit, is called “Carrier IQ”. Even though it was uncovered last year, it is still in millions of smartphones. That includes Android smartphones. Malware for mobile devices is going to take a devastating increase in occurrences. Since Android is the most popular, expect them on this Google platform with a passion. Cyber criminals are always looking for a victim and the Android mobile operating system is ripe for the picking.
Special Dates And Special Destructive Code
Some are giving a warning to look out this year for special malware disguised as normal apps. The Olympics are coming up and it is for sure that some evil coder is working on another way to trick an unsuspecting Android downloader. The United States Presidential elections are also this year and the same malware can be disguised as some helpful voting app. It is a jungle out there and the Internet is just a reflection of it.
What Can An Android Lover Do?
One of the best things to do is to download apps that are from reputable, known sites. The Android marketplace is somewhat safe, but nasty apps have found their way there as well. In fact, the “GG Tracker” is the work of someone who managed to fake the whole Google Android marketplace. The cunning mind of the cracker led people to click on “in app” ads that took them to the fake Android marketplace. People, Android users that is, were generally unaware that anything was wrong until they started seeing their cellular bill. It was full of exotic premium SMS fees. Expect 2012 to be an exciting year for Android security problems.

3 Ways Android Spy Can Help Your Business
For businesses who have 100% of employees working on location or who don’t issue smart phones to personnel, cell phone monitoring tools like Android Spy will not be of any great benefit. But for a growing number of businesses who have a significant percentage of external employees with company-issued mobile devices, cell phone spy applications are becoming increasingly popular. In particular, platforms like Android Spy can enhance overall business performance and profits in three critical ways:
Android Spy Helps Manage and Coordinate External EmployeesCompanies with employees out in the field tend to waste a lot of time and resources trying to find out where personnel are located and then allocate them to service existing needs. But for companies using cell phone spy software with Real Time Location Tracking, it only takes a few seconds to access the user account and find out which employees are closest to a problem and assign them accordingly. And to aid in the development of future company policies, it is best to employ applications like Android Spy that also include Location History that record all cell phone movement.
Android Spy Reduces Personal Smart Phone Use
What if your business could install cell phone spy software that could literally boost employee productivity by up to 10% or more? No, it is not an inflated statistic because studies reveal that employees spend up to 5 hours of company time each week on personal emails, texts, and other unsanctioned activities. Employee monitoring platforms like Android Spy can end or significantly reduce personal smart phone use thus potentially boosting overall productivity by up to 10%.
Android Spy Increases Compliance with Company PoliciesWhen employees fail to comply with company procedures and policies, it is often at the expense of putting the business at increased liability risk. Because monitored employees are more likely to comply with company policies, cell phone spy software is a great way to lower liability risks and boost overall employee compliance.
But while there is no doubt that companies can benefit from deploying cell phone spy tools on employee smart phones, this is no guarantee that they will actually see any benefit. This is because some cell phone monitoring applications lack the sophisticated surveillance tools necessary to actually track all employee activities. For best results, businesses should only install higher quality cell phone spy software that include these core surveillance features:
Location TrackingIM, Text, Video, Picture and Email LogCall RecordingWeb HistorySurround RecordingContact DetailsFor any business with external employees, cell phone spy software can provide a number of tangible benefits, including: Better coordination of external employees; Reduction of personal smart phone use and; Better employee compliance with company policies and procedures. Just
make sure that you install high quality applications like Android Spy that has the core surveillance tools necessary to track and record all smart phone activity.

Leading Android Features Missing in iPhones
Android and iPhone are among the most popular phones in the market at the moment. Their popularity has been raised by the unique features which can be found in these phones. The following are some unique features in Androids but are conspicuously missing in iPhones.
True app combination
Although the iPhone has in the recent past introduced the Google voice in their applications, the experience is still unmatched to that of the android. The iPhone apps direct the user to a default dialer as well as visual voicemail apps that will assist you to navigate it manually. Android offers a classic option where the user can set the feature once and the rest of the calls dialed through the phone go through Google Voice. This app integration feature has also made it simple to use custom SMS, phone, browser apps and voicemails.
The flash
This is an important feature used for several purposes such as viewing flash sites, playing games and watching flash videos are just a few of the common tasks you will need the flash for. Android has this app ready in the system hence you can be assured you can access all the flash features hassle free.
Alternate keyboards
The Android offers a variety of keyboard options such as innovative like swipe, text predictors like Swiftkey and downright adventurous such as 8pen. Typing can be really painful if you have a phone with small keyboard. This is the reason why Android provides a variety of keyboard options to their users. However, the keyboards are available as apps hence the user will have to import and install them. This process is very simplified hence everyone can accomplish it conveniently. These systems are rare in regular phones but they offer the kind of features that you would be on the lookout for.
Automation
Among the most essential and powerful applications found in the Androids is the Tasker. It provides a simple for automating the Android into a superphone. You can either turn settings on or off for particular location, applications, time of day or any other reason you can think of. All you need is to prepare commands of what you want done on your phon and save the settings. Tasker has ability to access even the furthest folders in your phone and implement the commands. This application is rarely available in other phones.
Customized home launchers
Although iPhone users who have jailbroken their phones their phones can customize their home screens to a certain extent, they cannot attain the kind of experience delivered by the custom home launchers of Android. There are third party launchers offering a offering a wide range of home screen features on the phone such as shortcuts, gestures and low level settings that can enhance performance of older phones. Irrespective whether you are using the highly modifiable ADWLauncher or incredibly fast LauncherPro, the third party launchers have limitless configurations you can add to your device.
Widgets
Although these applications normally occupy large spaces on the screen, their role can be substituted for nothing more. Whether it is a weather or music widget showing you the song playing in the background, nothing can replace the experience of the apps. The most important is the

Getting the Most Out Of Your Android Battery
This is not just a symptom of Android phones it is also a problem with iPhone’s. I used to an iPhone but I can’t remember where t find some of the setting I mention later so I couldn’t include it in my list. All of these changes are really simple to do and I have not included anything that requires you to get too nerdy. Read through the list make the changes and you will find yourself holding a smartphone that may give you and extra hour or so in battery life.
Check your usage
These setting details are how they are displayed on a HTC Desire, they may be slightly different on a different brand. Being Android however the setting will be found roughly in the same location. To find out what is actually sucking all the power from your phone you need to the ‘battery usage’ screen. To find it go to ‘settings’, ‘about phone’, ‘battery usage’.
This will show that the number one culprit is the screen noramlly by quite some distance; it is a big power drain, especially in the newer larger screen phones. To get the most out of your phone you need to make sure that the screen is set to use the minimum of power.
Many phones will have an auto adjust feature, turn this off as it will use more power than simply turning the brightness level down manually. Unless you are sitting in the bright sunshine you should only need to have your screen at 10-20%.
Making this one change alone will have a noticeable effect of the battery life. I added a settings widget to my home screen so that I could quickly up the brightness levels when I needed to.
Security
Screen timeout is another major factor. Is it really necessary to have your screen on for 1 minute after you have put it in your pocket? Change the time to something like 10 – 20 seconds. All those minutes with your screen is glowing in your pocket s a waste of power.
Internet
One simply rule, keep it turned off. All that background data synced is battery hungry. Turn it on and enjoy having the internet out and about, but be sensible. When you are sitting at your desk at work do you really need emails being picked up by your phone! The same goes for WiFi, when in a WiFi zone it will save you battery as WiFi is less power hungry than 3G. However when you are not in range of a hotspot the phone is constantly searching for one. The searching for one uses up vital power.
Both of these can be changed via a widget, add the setting widget to one of your screens for easy access.
GPS
Great as it is that you can now find out where you are in the world with your mobiles GPS. You may thing that you only use GPA when using apps like maps or navigation. Well not quite. Social apps like Facebook and even taking a photo use GPS. Turn it off unit you actually need it.
Can’t be bothered
This sounds like it could be achievable, after all they can be changed using a really simple widget. However, the reality is that even with the best intentions you will start to forget. Luckily Google Play has a host of apps that will automate this all for you. Using a variety of techniques s they can change setting based on time of the day and location.
I use Juice Defender and it basically scans your usage and then will turn off as much as it can without you having to think about it.

5 Tips On How To Make Your Blog Visitors Stay Longer
The length of time that you can keep your visitors on your website can be a crucial factor in determining how successful your blog will be.
Simply getting traffic in the form of thousands of unique visitors daily is meaningless if the time they spend on your site is less than a few seconds or your bounce rate is more than 95%.
There are certain things you can do in the way you present your pages and posts which will maximize the chances of your visitors sticking around for a longer period on your site.
The longer people stay the greater your opportunity to monetize their visit or convince them to take your desired call to action.
A call to action is an Internet marketing term which refers to the primary action that you want your visitors to take when they land on your page or website. One example of a call to action is where you want someone to click your

Importance of Ethics for Your Online Success
The internet offers a huge amount of benefits to those who wish to take the time to build a business or offer something creative to share with the rest of the world.
The qualities about online businesses which attracts the most people is the flexibility of lifestyle and the prospect of making a very good living because of the huge global exposure and reach which you potentially have by being connected online.
Unfortunately due to this wide potential market base there will always be those who will try to exploit this in ways considered to be unethical. I guess this shouldn’t come as a surprise because unethical business practices happen all the time and have been happening since man first started to trade in ancient times.
The only difference is, now with the interconnectedness of the world wide web and the huge internet technological advancements, the unethical side of business and marketing has been magnified.
For instance before the internet really started to take off in the late nineties, people were hardly ever confronted with ads, spam or junk mail about

HP TouchPad Ice Cream Sandwich CM9 updated to Alpha 0.6
Everyone’s favorite firesale tablet is still going strong, at least as far as developers and modders are concerned. The HP TouchPad got a port of CyanogenMod 9 ice cream sandwich just a few weeks ago, and the progress made thus far is impressive to say the least. While still in Alpha, the ROM build has graduated to Alpha 0.6, with a number of additions to the stability and user interface of Android. Adventurous flashers can download the build from RootzWiki now, and install it normally through Clockwork Mod Recovery.

Samsung spending millions on Galaxy Note Super Bowl ad
We’re pretty stoked about the Samsung Galaxy Note finally making its way stateside – but not nearly as excited as Samsung themselves. Today the Samsung Mobile US Twitter account teased an upcoming Super Bowl ad, and their wording leaves little doubt that it’s promoting the 5.3-inch smartphone bound for AT&T later in February. Samsung claimed that the ad will be “one of the longest in the game”, which points to at least a 60-second spot and maybe even a 90-second one. Considering that a single 30-second commercial during the Super Bowl runs about 3-4 million dollars, Samsung is poised to spend a heck of a lot of money for a single promotion. They’ve even hired the producer of Dumb & Dumber and There’s Something About Mary to oversee the project.

But now it seems that dozens of unofficial Steam apps, including the pretty awesome application from IBF Programs featured on Android Community a month ago. There’s no word from Google or Valve, the creators and administrators of Steam, but it’s a good bet that the publisher and retailer has at least some say in the proceedings.

HTC Ville prototype caught on video
Appropriately, HTC Hub broke the news and brought the YouTube video to the attention of the Internet. The three-minute spy video doesn’t show much – it appears to be the Ville in an office somewhere, probably being tested before a carrier announcement, almost certainly in Europe. While it’s claimed that the hardware on display is a prototype, it looks pretty complete as-is, even including the HTS SENSE tag on the back battery cover. Speaking of which, the skin running on Android appears to be Sense UI 4.0. That implies (but doesn’t guarantee) that the phone is running Ice Cream Sandwich. The software menu states that both Sense 4 and Android 4.0.1 are running. Interestingly, the model on display uses the three Ice Cream Sandwich navigation buttons, but they’re capacitive buttons below the screen.
Check it out for yourself below – unfirtunately, 360p is the best we’re going to get for the moment.
The HTC Ville’s rumored specs are as follows: a dual-core 1.5Ghz processor powers a 4.3-inch screen running at qHD resolution. That’s not mind-boggling by any means, though the Ville is expected to use an AMOLED display panel. The Ville is expected to be the thinnest HTC device to date at just 8.4mm 0 for refference, that’s almost exactly in between a DROID RAZR and DROID RAZR MAXX. Not bad for a company known for rather bulky designs. The Ville is expected to have a formal unveiling at Mobile World Congress in late february, along with the new quad-core flagship, the HTC Edge.

Official Ice Cream Sandwich build leaks for Samsung Nexus S 4G
Nexus S owners were among the first to get an official update to Ice Cream Sandwich, direct from the source at Google – at least, those with the GSM model were. Owners of the CDMA-equipped Nexus S 4G have had to be content with community ROMs and other unofficial fare ever since December (and boy, haven’t they let us know). Good news, Nexus faithful: a leaked ROM of Android 4.0 made its way to XDA in the wee hours of the morning. What’s more, it does so via a sneaky little partition setup that doesn’t touch the phone’s bootloader – thereby preserving user’s manufacturer warranties.

Nokia 910 breaks cover through Dutch retailer
The latest handset from the blossoming Nokia and Windows Phone partnership has been leaked, with the Lumia 910 appearing on a Dutch retailer's website.
The as-yet-unannounced Nokia Lumia 910 looks to be practically identical to the Lumia 900 recently announced for US market, exclusively on the AT&T network.
The only difference between the 900 and the 910, according to the Dutch site Typhone.com appears to be an upgrade to the camera.
The listing claims that the device boasts a 12-megapixel camera, rather than the 8-megapixel offering served-up by the Lumia 910.
Is this our version of the 900?Naturally the site says that Windows Phone 7.5 will be on-board when the device eventually lands, although there's no date attached to the holding page.
It was thought that the Lumia 900 would be coming to UK shores this summer, the 910 could be the device that eventually lands on UK shores.

After Sony bought out Ericsson in October 2011 this was the last major hurdle for it to overcome and with this now out of the way, it opens the gates to a ream of Sony branded handsets this year.

Sky's new broadband TV goes after Netflix
Sky has announced a brand new internet TV service, aimed at selling its premium content to those people who do not currently want a satellite service but have a broadband connection and are happy to pay.
In a key move, Sky will offer movies at first, and then expand to sport and entertainment, with the UK launch set for 'the first half of this year'.
The offering will be available across numerous devices, including PCs and Macs, but also tablets, mobile phones, games consoles and connected TVs.
ShacklesIt is not the first time Sky has broken free from the shackles of satellite broadcasting, but this scheme is designed to move beyond what was attempted on Sky Player and provide anyone with a broadband connection (and a suitable device) simple pay-monthly or pay-as-you-go offerings.
The obvious target to this move is Netflix, which has launched in the UK and made it clear that it is hoping to hoover up movies lovers from the likes of Sky, although the likes of BT Vision, Lovefilm and the forthcoming Google TV and YouView will be watchful.
"This exciting new service will offer some of Sky's most popular content through a wide range of broadband connected devices," said Sky chief executive Jeremy Darroch.
Growth"Alongside the continued growth of our satellite platform, this will be a new way for us to reach out to consumers who love great content, but may not want the full Sky service," he added
"Bringing a distinctive, new choice to the marketplace will help us meet the needs and demands of an ever wider range of consumers.
"This new product launch will build on our early leadership in multi-platform distribution. It will allow us to make our expertise and investment in content and technology work even harder, extending our options for continued growth."
The pricing has not yet been revealed but will no doubt be made clear closer to launch, with the arrival set for the first half of this year.

Apple 'working on NFC for iPhone 5'
Reports suggesting Apple is to bring near-field communications (NFC) functionality to its next iPhone have surfaced.
We are expecting the iPhone 5 to be announced later this year and according Mastercard and app developers, Apple is busy working on NFC technology.
9to5Mac claims to have spoken with the well-connected developer at Macworld who disclosed information received from Apple iOS engineers saying they are "heavily into NFC".
The developer in question has not been named, but is working on a dedicated iOS app which includes NFC reading for mobile transactions. When questioned how confident he was on the information he had received his reply was "Enough to bet the app development on".
The plot thickensIf Apple is working towards a NFC solution, a payment systems partner will be required and the Fast Company may have sourced the company in question.
In an interview with Ed McLaughlin, head of emerging payments at MasterCard, hints were dropped that Apple is working on NFC technology.
When asked to "estimate for when smartphone payments would become commonplace" McLaughlin replied "I don't know of a handset manufacturer that isn't in process of making sure their stuff is PayPass ready".
When pushed to disclose whether the Cupertino based company was included, McLaughlin responded "like I say,
