Galaxy Nexus Franco kernel shows us the need for speed, and great battery life

Recently here at Android Community we’ve been enjoying many different kernels for the Galaxy Nexus and have even featured a few here in the recent past. While many are great and work well today we have what appears to be one of the absolute best at the moment. That is the Franco kernel. More details and impressions after the break.

HP TouchPad Ice Cream Sandwich CM9 updated to Alpha 0.6

Everyone’s favorite firesale tablet is still going strong, at least as far as developers and modders are concerned. The HP TouchPad got a port of CyanogenMod 9 ice cream sandwich just a few weeks ago, and the progress made thus far is impressive to say the least. While still in Alpha, the ROM build has graduated to Alpha 0.6, with a number of additions to the stability and user interface of Android. Adventurous flashers can download the build from RootzWiki now, and install it normally through Clockwork Mod Recovery.

The LG Optimus L3 phone is being listed as the E400 and we don’t know much about this phone but it appears LG is shaking up their design plans yet again. Running on Gingerbread the capacitive buttons seem to be hiding at first glance.

Samsung spending millions on Galaxy Note Super Bowl ad

We’re pretty stoked about the Samsung Galaxy Note finally making its way stateside – but not nearly as excited as Samsung themselves. Today the Samsung Mobile US Twitter account teased an upcoming Super Bowl ad, and their wording leaves little doubt that it’s promoting the 5.3-inch smartphone bound for AT&T later in February. Samsung claimed that the ad will be “one of the longest in the game”, which points to at least a 60-second spot and maybe even a 90-second one. Considering that a single 30-second commercial during the Super Bowl runs about 3-4 million dollars, Samsung is poised to spend a heck of a lot of money for a single promotion. They’ve even hired the producer of Dumb & Dumber and There’s Something About Mary to oversee the project.

Third-party Steam apps muscled out of the Market

A lot of gamers got excited when the mobile Steam app was released last week for iOS and Android. (At least until they tried to log in and found out they weren’t part of the inner Beta circle.) But now it seems that dozens of unofficial Steam apps, including the pretty awesome application from IBF Programs featured on Android Community a month ago. There’s no word from Google or Valve, the creators and administrators of Steam, but it’s a good bet that the publisher and retailer has at least some say in the proceedings.

Tablet shipments could hit 383.3 million by 2017

Many of us were skeptical at first, but there’s no doubt tablets have revolutionized the way we run our daily lives – that is, if you have one. It’s estimated the tablet market will group from 72.7 million units to 383.3 by 2017. But what does this mean for the average consumer? That tablets are right on there way to hitting the “sweet-spot” price point that we’ve been waiting for.

The popular app updates today with version 3.0, bringing in an overhauled interface and new integration with social services. HTC Ville prototype caught on video

Exciting news for HTC fans this morning, as one of the two models expected to debut at Mobile World Congress in February has jumped through the loops of secrecy to grace YouTube. The HTC Ville is one of the Taiwanese manufacturer’s “hero” devices for 2012, with impressive specifications, a slim profile and subtle styling. One of the most notable features of the Ville (likely a code name) is that it’s rumored to be one of the first HTC phones to reach retail with Ice Cream Sandwich.

Appropriately, HTC Hub broke the news and brought the YouTube video to the attention of the Internet. The three-minute spy video doesn’t show much – it appears to be the Ville in an office somewhere, probably being tested before a carrier announcement, almost certainly in Europe. While it’s claimed that the hardware on display is a prototype, it looks pretty complete as-is, even including the HTS SENSE tag on the back battery cover. Speaking of which, the skin running on Android appears to be Sense UI 4.0. That implies (but doesn’t guarantee) that the phone is running Ice Cream Sandwich. The software menu states that both Sense 4 and Android 4.0.1 are running. Interestingly, the model on display uses the three Ice Cream Sandwich navigation buttons, but they’re capacitive buttons below the screen.

Check it out for yourself below – unfirtunately, 360p is the best we’re going to get for the moment.

The HTC Ville’s rumored specs are as follows: a dual-core 1.5Ghz processor powers a 4.3-inch screen running at qHD resolution. That’s not mind-boggling by any means, though the Ville is expected to use an AMOLED display panel. The Ville is expected to be the thinnest HTC device to date at just 8.4mm 0 for refference, that’s almost exactly in between a DROID RAZR and DROID RAZR MAXX. Not bad for a company known for rather bulky designs. The Ville is expected to have a formal unveiling at Mobile World Congress in late february, along with the new quad-core flagship, the HTC Edge.

Official Ice Cream Sandwich build leaks for Samsung Nexus S 4G

Nexus S owners were among the first to get an official update to Ice Cream Sandwich, direct from the source at Google – at least, those with the GSM model were. Owners of the CDMA-equipped Nexus S 4G have had to be content with community ROMs and other unofficial fare ever since December (and boy, haven’t they let us know). Good news, Nexus faithful: a leaked ROM of Android 4.0 made its way to XDA in the wee hours of the morning. It appears to be the real McCoy, even sporting Android 4.04 – which isn’t even part of the official source code yet.

Now rival security software vendor Lookout Mobile Security claims that Symantec’s post was overblown, and that the code executing in the 13 apps identified is overly aggressive adware, not malware.

What’s more, it does so via a sneaky little partition setup that doesn’t touch the phone’s bootloader – thereby preserving user’s manufacturer warranties.

Sprint posts Samsung Galaxy Nexus sign-up page

Galaxy Nexus will be among Sprint's first leap into 4G LTE tech

Wireless carrier Sprint will be bringing the Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphone to its customers after posting a sign-up page on its website.

The 4G LTE-enabled handset has been a Verizon exclusive since its launch last month, but will now debut as one of Sprint's first LTE handsets later this year.

The company has previously focused on the WiMAX standard on devices like the HTC Evo 4G but has now embraced the rival LTE technology.

Sprint hasn't confirmed exactly when the device will go on sale, but is giving interested potential customers the opportunity to sign-up.

Google Wallet on board

The Ice Cream Sandwich-toting handset will also have the NFC Google Wallet payment app on-board, whereas Verizon has decided to wait until it is further developed before embracing.

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus, the flagship Android 4.0 phone, was created in close collaboration with Google.

It has a 4.65-inch, 720p display, 1.2GHz dual core processor, 32GB storage, 1GB RAM and a 5-megapixel camera with an LED flash.

Nokia 910 breaks cover through Dutch retailer

Nokia Lumia 910 could boast a 12-megapixel camera

The latest handset from the blossoming Nokia and Windows Phone partnership has been leaked, with the Lumia 910 appearing on a Dutch retailer's website.

The as-yet-unannounced Nokia Lumia 910 looks to be practically identical to the Lumia 900 recently announced for US market, exclusively on the AT&T network.

The only difference between the 900 and the 910, according to the Dutch site Typhone.com appears to be an upgrade to the camera.

The listing claims that the device boasts a 12-megapixel camera, rather than the 8-megapixel offering served-up by the Lumia 910.

Is this our version of the 900?

Naturally the site says that Windows Phone 7.5 will be on-board when the device eventually lands, although there's no date attached to the holding page.

It was thought that the Lumia 900 would be coming to UK shores this summer, the 910 could be the device that eventually lands on UK shores.

Nokia Lumia 800 audio and camera issues confirmed

Lumia 800 experiencing a torrid time

Nokia has confirmed Lumia 800 bugs concerning audio and camera functions, but denies there is still a battery issue after an update was released earlier this month.

Nokia Lumia 800 owners have taken to the Nokia forums to vent their spleen saying they are still experiencing battery issues, as well as highlighting problems with the audio and camera on the Windows Phone handset.

Nokia has been quick to respond by posting a statement on the forums, saying that its tests showed the battery issue had been resolved by the latest update (1600.2483.8106.11500) and the issues regarding audio and camera bugs had not been overlooked.

The Lumia 800 team offered tips for optimal battery usage, to try and address the continued problem some users are having.

Why are we waiting?

The Finns confirmed that updates are currently being developed to address the audio and camera issues and they will be rolled out in a series of future updates.

There is no time frame from Nokia on when we may see the updates which may frustrate users who have suffered various issues with their Lumia 800.

Has Nokia done enough, or is it responding too slowly? Let us know in the comment box below.

Sony Ericsson takeover given thumbs up

When two become one

Approval for Sony's takeover of the Sony Ericsson brand has been granted by the European commission.

After Sony bought out Ericsson in October 2011 this was the last major hurdle for it to overcome and with this now out of the way, it opens the gates to a ream of Sony branded handsets this year.

Sony Ericsson recorded big losses in Q4 of 2011 and the hope is that with Sony in sole control of the brand, it will be able to turn the ship around and put the smartphone division back on track.

And then there was one

We are expecting to see a wave of Sony branded handsets at MWC 2012 in Barcelona at the end of February and there has been no shortage of potential phones leaked over the past month.

We've seen a potential Sony handset road map leaked, with details on the Kumquat, Pepper, Tapioca and Nyphon emerging over the last few weeks.

Coupled with the launch of the Sony Xperia S at CES 2012, it looks like Sony is going to have a very busy year in the smartphone market and we are keen to see what it has to offer.

Sky's new broadband TV goes after Netflix

Netflix now facing a whole new threat

Sky has announced a brand new internet TV service, aimed at selling its premium content to those people who do not currently want a satellite service but have a broadband connection and are happy to pay.

In a key move, Sky will offer movies at first, and then expand to sport and entertainment, with the UK launch set for 'the first half of this year'.

The offering will be available across numerous devices, including PCs and Macs, but also tablets, mobile phones, games consoles and connected TVs.

Shackles

It is not the first time Sky has broken free from the shackles of satellite broadcasting, but this scheme is designed to move beyond what was attempted on Sky Player and provide anyone with a broadband connection (and a suitable device) simple pay-monthly or pay-as-you-go offerings.

The obvious target to this move is Netflix, which has launched in the UK and made it clear that it is hoping to hoover up movies lovers from the likes of Sky, although the likes of BT Vision, Lovefilm and the forthcoming Google TV and YouView will be watchful.

"This exciting new service will offer some of Sky's most popular content through a wide range of broadband connected devices," said Sky chief executive Jeremy Darroch.

Growth

"Alongside the continued growth of our satellite platform, this will be a new way for us to reach out to consumers who love great content, but may not want the full Sky service," he added

"Bringing a distinctive, new choice to the marketplace will help us meet the needs and demands of an ever wider range of consumers.

"This new product launch will build on our early leadership in multi-platform distribution. It will allow us to make our expertise and investment in content and technology work even harder, extending our options for continued growth."

The pricing has not yet been revealed but will no doubt be made clear closer to launch, with the arrival set for the first half of this year.

Apple 'working on NFC for iPhone 5'

Say goodbye to your wallet - Apple has got you covered

Reports suggesting Apple is to bring near-field communications (NFC) functionality to its next iPhone have surfaced.

We are expecting the iPhone 5 to be announced later this year and according Mastercard and app developers, Apple is busy working on NFC technology.

9to5Mac claims to have spoken with the well-connected developer at Macworld who disclosed information received from Apple iOS engineers saying they are "heavily into NFC".

The developer in question has not been named, but is working on a dedicated iOS app which includes NFC reading for mobile transactions. When questioned how confident he was on the information he had received his reply was "Enough to bet the app development on".

The plot thickens

If Apple is working towards a NFC solution, a payment systems partner will be required and the Fast Company may have sourced the company in question.

In an interview with Ed McLaughlin, head of emerging payments at MasterCard, hints were dropped that Apple is working on NFC technology.

When asked to "estimate for when smartphone payments would become commonplace" McLaughlin replied "I don't know of a handset manufacturer that isn't in process of making sure their stuff is PayPass ready".

When pushed to disclose whether the Cupertino based company was included, McLaughlin responded "like I say,

Sony Xperia P set for MWC 2012 unveil

Sony is working its way through the alphabet

The Xperia Nypon (LT22i) looks set to launch as the Sony Xperia P, joining the Xperia S and forthcoming Xperia U in Sony's alphabetical stable.

The leak has come via the Indonesian Telecoms Regulatory body, which was also responsible for the leak of the Xperia U (Kumquat) name earlier this month.

It seems Sony is to follow the letter-base naming scheme for its self titled handsets, after taking full control of Sony Ericsson at the end of last year.

Easy as A, B, C

The Xperia P will reportedly sport a similar look to the Xperia S, but slot into the mid-range market with a dual-core 1GHz processor, 4-inch qHD screen and an 8MP camera.

According to a leaked roadmap for Sony devices earlier this month the Xperia P is expected to hit the selves in April at around

Samsung Galaxy Nexus set for CPU reboot

Do we really need this? Just give us the Galaxy S3!

Samsung and Google could re-launch the Galaxy Nexus with a beefed up 1.5GHz processor and GPU from Texas Instruments if early benchmark tests are to be believed.

The news was triggered after a new benchmark score was spotted on the Nenamark site, which displayed a Galaxy Nexus with a PowerVR SGX544 graphics processor.

This GPU from Texas Instruments comes with a 1.8GHz processor, but could be underclocked to 1.5GHz for the Nexus, as the processor in the original Nexus was underclocked from 1.5GHz to 1.2GHz.

Please press refresh

The result found on the benchmarking site could well be a fake; however Samsung have a track record of re-releasing handsets which slightly different specs. Just take a look at the Samsung Galaxy S Advance.

HTC Ville makes video debut

HTC Ville - has a back and a front

Tipsters are rushing to get their phone leaks in before MWC 2012 kicks off, with the HTC Ville making its video debut ahead of the year's biggest phone show.

As well as flaunting its size zero body (it's quite slim), the video made by HTC Hub shows off the HTC Ville's OS as Android Ice Cream Sandwich with Sense 4.0. Sadly, the video has since been set to private so we'll have to settle for photos.

But rest assured, the animated transitions looked nice and zippy and, while the homescreens didn't look hugely different, most icon and widget design elements are a bit neater than previous iterations.
