Google tells devs how to kick the Android menu button to the curb in ICS

Ice Cream Sandwich removes the ubiquitous Android Menu bottom from its comfy place below the screen and casts it adrift on the sea of interface, where it floats around the screen like Tom Hanks and a volleyball. This change has given grief to a lot of developers (not to mention users): Is the Menu section hiding out in the navigation bar? Slumming it up top near search buttons and titles? Fret not, devs: the latest post to the Android Developer Blog gives some guidance on exactly how to handle the new system.

First of all, it’s not a “Menu button’ anymore. It’s an action overflow: functions should only be placed in a menu if hey can’t be reasonably handled elsewhere in the interface. Depending upon your app, what it’s designed to do and what device you intend it to be used on, that could cover a whole lot or not very much at all. Take a look at Google’s example: for every app that needs a search function, a search bar is present on the top. Don’t need search, or any of the other standard bar functions? The action bar disappears - in which case, the menu button action overflow reverts to its position in the navigation bar. Unless you’re using a tablet, when it slides on over to the notification area. Unless you just build a button into the app itself. Or not.

Herein lies the problem with radical interface  changes: you have to retain people to use something that they’re already comfortable using. I’m not saying that removing the menu button was a mistake – on my custom Galaxy Nexus ROM, I have the option of a permanent menu button and leave it disabled. But users need time to acclimate to the new system. A lot of time, thanks to the multiple versions of Android still being sold on devices at retail. (Deleting the Search button was a mistake.) Developers, if you’re having trouble adjusting to the new system, not to mention making sure that your Ice Cream Sandwich apps are backwards-compatible, be sure to give Google’s blog post a gander.

What Google needs to focus on is having this “menu” bar at the same place on the screen.. Even in their own apps it moves all over the place.. (top bar in some apps, bottom bar in some apps)  See Market and Voice, YouTube,  Reader where its on the top..    Gmail and Maps at the bottom..

Ross Holden

Personally I like the SplitActionBar.  It utilises available space if necessary and doesn’t bundle everything into the overflow.  An overflow with 9 options would be awful.

http://profiles.google.com/leemarkin Mark Lee

i agree that the menu button should be placed at the top right corner consistently even the second (split) action bar is used.

Motorola XYBOARD WiFi tablets available for purchase

If you’re anything like the writers and editors here at Android Community, you’re in no hurry to be saddled with yet another monthly contract – even for the luxury of an LTE-enabled tablet. That was one of the the things that made the quite solid Motorola DROID XYBOARD tablets on Verizon much less desirable than they might otherwise have been. After a few weeks of pre-orders, Motorola has made both the XYBOARD 10.1 and XYBOARD 8.2 available for purchase on their website in WiFi-only forms. They’re absent the DROID branding, which is an exclusive marketing tool for Verizon’s partner hardware.

They came away impressed, and noted some radical – and in many cases welcome – changes.

Motorola shipped just 1 million tablets in 2011

It’s quarterly earnings season in the technology world, also known as the most breathlessly exciting time in a tech blogger’s existence. Amid reports of an $80 million loss that the company attributes to expenses for the upcoming Google acquisition, Motorola noted that they sold just 200,000 XOOM tablets in the fourth quarter of 2011. Combined with the first three quarters and (low) early sales of the DROID XYBOARD tablets on Verizon, that makes for a rough figure of about 1 million tablets shipped.

HP commits to release open source WebOS by September

The HP TouchPad failed but other manufacturers will get the chance to redeem WebOS

HP's WebOS will begin life as an open source operating system in September 2012 after the company committed to a release time frame.

The operating system, developed and formerly owned by Palm, was given a stay of execution last month when HP decided to offer the software up to the open source community rather than ditch the division.

The source code will be released in September, but for now developers can get cracking on building apps with today's launch of the Enyo 2.0 tool.

Enyo 2.0 enables developers to create apps for WebOS, which will also work for Android, iOS and web browsers like Firefox and Google Chrome.

Decisive step forward

"HP is bringing the innovation of the webOS platform to the open source community," said Bill Veghte, HP's executive vice president and chief strategy officer.

"This is a decisive step toward meeting our goal of accelerating the platform's development and ensuring that its benefits will be delivered to the entire ecosystem of web applications."

In today's announcement HP has laid out the timescale for the next nine months which will result in the launch of a full WebOS course code in September.

The company originally bought WebOS from Palm in April 2010 for $1.2 billion but its grand plans to enter the smartphone and tablet business ended in failure when the Pre 3 and TouchPad floundered badly.

Samsung Galaxy S3 delayed beyond MWC?

No Galaxy S3 announcement at MWC?

Reports on Tuesday suggest that Samsung has decided against unveiling the Samsung Galaxy S3 device at this year's Mobile World Congress.

The Verge says that 'people familiar with the matter' have indicated that the Korean giant plans to delay the announcement until after February's annual mobile expo in Barcelona.

The sequel to the ultra-successful Galaxy S2 will still arrive "before summer" according to the source.

While hardware production itself is thought not to be delayed, it appears that Samsung may have has chosen to delay the announcement to shorten the wait between reveal and retail.

The news comes contrary to reports earlier on Tuesday which suggested the handset will arrive with Ice Cream Sandwich and a 12-megapixel camera in time for a UK launch in April

CES sneak peak

Most observers believed that the S3 would arrive in Barcelona, especially after an unidentified device appeared in the company's official CES wrap video.

The handset in the video featured what appeared to be a longer-thinner device with a larger edge-to-edge screen.

The Verge reports that the Korean giant still has plenty of interesting stuff to unveil at MWC with new Windows Phones and Galaxy Tab tablets possibly in the works.

Xbox Live coming to Android, iOS and more?

Coming to a mobile phone near you.

Microsoft is looking to build on the success of 2011's biggest selling console, by rolling out its popular Xbox Live gaming platform to Android and iOS devices.

Xbox Live games are currently only compatible with Windows Phone devices, but Microsoft has realised that its huge fan base will be using a range of mobile devices. Microsoft has already released a Xbox Live app for iOS, but minus any gaming features.

A spokesperson for Microsoft said; "While the Xbox Live experiences and games always work best on the Windows platform, we understand that some Xbox fans may be using other types of devices. To satisfy that need, we are working to extend a few of our Xbox experiences and titles to other platforms."

One step forward and two steps back

This news will be music to Xbox owners' ears, as Microsoft look to build its gaming platform on the two biggest mobile operating systems in the world.

However Microsoft could be shooting itself in the foot as the Xbox Live gaming feature is a unique selling point for its Windows Phone handsets, but with plans to branch out to other operating systems sales for Windows Phone devices may decline.

Is Microsoft willing to sacrifice its Windows Phone OS in light of greater dominance in the mobile gaming arena and increased revenue via its Xbox Live channel?

Microsoft says "Xbox Live experiences and games always work best on the Windows platform", but we're not sure if this is a big enough draw for consumers to go down the Windows Phone route when other options are on the table.

Sony Tapioca and Nypon phones break cover

Sony needs to shut the door and close the windows

It looks like Sony needs to take more care with its upcoming products, as yet more details about future phones have leaked out.

First off, details about a budget smartphone, the Sony Tapioca/Sony LT21i, have surfaced suggesting it will run Android 2.3.7 on a single-core 800MHz processor with 512MB of RAM and pack 4GB of internal storage, a 3.2-inch HVGA (320x480) screen, 3.2MP camera, WiFi connectivity and Bluetooth 2.1.

To say these specs are underwhelming would be an understatement, with the likes of other budget phones such as the ZTE Tania and rumoured HTC Primo both flaunting better vital statistics.

However the reduced power and features of the Tapioca could be due to the fact the handset looks set to ship to Asia, with no suggestions yet of a Europe or US launch.

Next please

A couple of snaps have emerged of the rumoured Sony (LT22i) Nypon, showing it to have some relatively uninspired design (think Xperia Arc S) and a slim form factor.

Currently no details have escaped into the wild for the Nypon, but judging by the track record of Sony-related leaks we will probably hear something before its predicted launch in April.

It's possible these handsets could make an appearance at MWC 2012, so we will be checking out Sony's stand to see what it has to offer.

HTC to scale back smartphone output in 2012

Sensations, Desires, Incredibles and Titans: There will be fewer of them

The head of HTC UK Phil Robertson has acknowledged that the company needs to 'get back to what made us great' after the Taiwanese manufacturer lost momentum in 2011.

He said HTC will focus more on hero devices and cut back on the number of phones it releases in the coming year, after outing a huge array of Android and Windows Phone devices last year.

Robertson said the company tried to do too much during the last calendar year, which contributed to its first fall in profits in the last two years, last quarter.

Too many products

Robertson said: "We have to get back to focusing on what made us great - amazing hardware and a great customer experience.

"We ended 2011 with far more products than we started out with. We tried to do too much.

"So 2012 is about giving our customers something special. We need to make sure we do not go so far down the line that we segment our products by launching lots of different SKUs."

With that in mind, the company is planning to focus more on smartphones than trying to compete with the iPad and other Android tablets.

Also, a smaller number of high-end smartphones are likely to dominate the landscape in the coming months, beginning with the launch of quad-core devices at February's Mobile World Congress event.

Samsung loses another patent case against Apple

Samsung - frowny face

It's not going too well for Samsung over in the German courts, where the second of three patent suits it brought against Apple has been rejected.

The blow comes just a week after the courts kicked its first patent complaint to the kerb, with both complaints relating to the 3G UMTS wireless telecommunications standard.

The ruling may have come as a bit of a surprise to Samsung, as IP expert Florian Mueller notes that this second case looked fairly promising at the relevant hearings back in November 2011.

Portents

The hearing to decide the fate of the third patent is set for 2 March, so Samsung has a bit of time to pick itself back up and brush itself off before it heads back to court.

As well as technical shenanigans like 3G standards, Samsung is also suing Apple over a patent relating to how one enters smileys on a mobile device.

You know, the really important stuff.

RIM CEO: Blackberry won't be sold or take easy route

But is it all too late for Blackberry?

Newly instated RIM CEO Thorsten Heins has revealed that despite the company's woes BlackBerry won't be sold and he is not looking to take the easy route out of the current situation - ie, bow down to Google and release BlackBerry-flavoured Android devices.

Speaking to Crackberry, Heins commented on rumours in the media on plans to break up or sell RIM, saying: "my true belief is that RIM has the strength and the assets that we can really succeed in this market".

He notes there is renewed positive energy in RIM's offices and it is proud of its integrated solution of hardware, software, services and network, but admits there will be a lot of change in terms of structure and software.

UK turning back on Blackberry

Challenging the philosophy of other manufactures who build devices to sit on Google's Android operating system, Heins admits that RIM is not following this easy route and instead is doing things the hard way, but believes its the right path for Blackberry and its users.

However this may be too little too late for RIM, in the UK at least, as a BBC Newsbeat investigation suggests almost three quarters of Blackberry users want to change their handsets.

This follows a series of problems Blackberry experienced during 2011 including service outages and handsets which failed to match the standards of competing devices.

'Samsung Galaxy S3' listed on official website

Will the Galaxy S3 feature at MWC 2012 after all?

A model number which has appeared on a Samsung website could be the new Samsung Galaxy S3.

The website, which allows users to download various manuals, software and drivers for a host of Samsung products, now displays model number GT-I9300 under the smart phones menu.

This follows a trend, with the original Galaxy S bearing model numbers using GT-I90xx and the Galaxy S2 using GT-I91xx.

The Galaxy S3 would be expected to use the GT-I92xx range, but the Galaxy Nexus uses GT-I9250, so it makes sense for the S3 to start with GT-I9300.

Ready for release?

So does this mean that the Galaxy S3 is actually ready for launch, with Samsung prepping its websites before the big day?

Well your guess is as good as ours, but it adds another twist in the ongoing saga of will-it, won't-it be launched at MWC 2012.

The official line from Samsung is it's still reviewing various options regarding when to launch the Galaxy S3, so we are going to have to sit patiently and wait. Darn.

Android Developers say bye to Menu button

Less buttons - more touchy touchy

Android Developers are being reminded by Google to shift their attention away from the Menu button and focus instead on the Action Bar.

The Menu button function is commonplace in pre-3.0 versions of Google's Android operating system. It allows users to view options for a particular application by pressing the Menu button on their device.

With the introduction of Honeycomb (version 3.0) and now Ice Cream Sandwich (version 4.0) the function has become redundant as these operating systems remove the need for physical buttons.

All change please

This year we expect to see a new wave of devices running Ice Cream Sandwich, so developers need to make sure they update their apps to use the Action Bar.

Developers need to follow the new Android user experience as many Android devices are expected in 2012 to feature button free designs.

Apps will continue to work on the new software, with Google building an action overflow button which acts as the menu button.

The action overflow button will display on all applications which have not been updated to Android 3.0

Jon Rubinstein leaves HP

Rubenstein leaves HP with his WebOS heading to the open source

Jon Rubinstein, the former CEO of Palm and the man who spearheaded the development of the WebOS software, has left Hewlett-Packard.

Rubinstein joined HP when the company bought WebOS back in 2010 and has now completed his 12-24 month commitment to the company.

"I am going to take a well deserved break after four and a half years of developing webOS," Rubinstein told AllThings D.

HP followed up with a statement of its own: "Jon has fulfilled his commitment and we wish him well."

Pre-conceived ideas

After a term at Apple working on the iPod line, Rubinstein returned to prominence around the time Palm made a comeback with the Pre handset in 2008, which saw the debut of WebOS.

The Pre was not a success and the promising WebOS software failed to reach its potential under both Palm and HP's leadership.

Following the TouchPad tablet fiasco, HP decided to release WebOS to the open source.

Motorola Droid Razr Maxx gives 8 hours of LTE battery life

Maxx battery life comes at a cost

The massive 3300mAh battery inside the new Motorola Droid Razr Maxx gives users over 8 hours of continued 4G LTE web-surfing, smashing marks set by its competitors.

The Droid Razr Maxx was launched this week with a huge $299 premium on a two year contract with Verizon, leading many to question whether the extra battery power was worth an extra $100.

However, in benchmarking tests undertaken by Laptop Mag the Maxx destroyed all other 4G LTE phones on the market, which have traditionally suffered from web-surfing at the next gen speeds.

The magazine found that the Razr Maxx lasted for 8.25 hours of continuous web-surfing at 40 per cent brightness.

Double time

That's almost twice as long as the original Droid Razr, which only mustered 4.45 hours using the same screen brightness and conditions.

The extra time corresponds almost exactly to the respective battery sizes - the only difference - between the two devices. That original Razr has a 1780mAh cell.

The Maxx's nearest competitor was the Samsung Droid Charge, which lasted for 6.42 hours before it needed, well, a charge, while the Samsung Galaxy Nexus slumped to just 3.40 hours.

Apple and Samsung head back to German courts

It's like looking in a patent-altered mirror

Apple has filed a new attack on Samsung in Germany, updating its lawsuit over the design of handsets including the Samsung Galaxy S2 and Samsung Galaxy S Plus.

The iPhone maker still seems determined to get the smartphones banned from sale, with the lawsuit accusing Samsung of infringing Apple's design rights on ten of its handsets.

As well as the smartphone-focussed suit, Apple has also begun proceedings against five unidentified Samsung tablets "related to a September ruling banning the Galaxy 10.1," court spokesman Peter Schuetz told Bloomberg.

Sneaky Samsung is sneaky

Samsung has already created sneaky work-arounds for preceding losses in the German courts, including the launch of the modified Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1N.

However, these alterations haven't stopped the Cupertino brand from going after other devices, and it's likely these will be those that haven't been given the 'N' treatment, like the original Galaxy Tab (which, let's face it, is almost identical to an iPad... what's with that huge bezel?)

What isn't clear is how this German situation will play out - attacking the Galaxy S Plus makes perfect sense given the similarities between it an older iPhones, but it will be interesting to see if Samsung has to alter the S2 to fit in.

Is this the Samsung Galaxy S3?

Is that even a real finger?

Samsung could have accidentally outed the Galaxy S3 at CES during a promotional video.

Highlighting the power of its camera range to take pictures from afar, the models are shown using a phone to remotely snap a photo with a device that features a similar design to the Galaxy S2, but with a much larger edge-to-edge display.

This is the sort of spec list we'd expect from Sammy's next superphone as it seeks to keep its title of top smartphone - thinner, larger-screened and more powerful will definitely be on the wish list of most potential buyers.

Real or no real?

But let's not get too carried away here - we are dealing with a promotional video set squarely in happy-happy-fake-land, and the screen looks suspiciously like a render rather than a next gen display.

Add to that the fact we get shown a boring old Samsung Galaxy S2 in the next shot, and it's highly possible that an over-excited videographer gave Samsung something to sweat over - or just tweaked a Galaxy Note to remove the Samsung Logo and alter the home button.

Either way, it's not long until Mobile World Congress, where we'll get to see what the Koreans have been cooking up over the last year - stay tuned to TechRadar to find out.

If you want to see the phone make a fleeting appearance, scoot through this video to around the seven minute mark and judge for yourself whether we're seeing the next generation of smartphones.

RIM looking to sell to Samsung?

RIM is actively seeking a sale to Samsung, according to BGR

Research in Motion is actively seeking an outright sale of one or more of its divisions to rival manufacturer Samsung, according to reports on Tuesday.

The crisis-hit Canadian smartphone manufacturer is seeking a $12 to $15 billion offer to sell its BlackBerry brand, according to BGR sources, with senior figures looking to entice Samsung into a bid.

The Korean giant, which enjoyed a massively profitable 2011, aided by the sale of Android phones like the Galaxy S2, is said to believe that RIM's current asking price is too high.

However, the BGR report adds that RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie is "going hard after Samsung" in order to facilitate a sale.

2012's first tech saga?

It seems that a potential RIM sale could become a running saga throughout 2012 considering the company's current perilous position on Wall Street and rapidly falling profits and market share.

Earlier reports have suggested that RIM may be willing to license its BlackBerry 10 software to other manufacturers, while it may also be prepared to open up the prized BlackBerry Messenger service to other app stores.

Last month we reported on rumours that Nokia and Microsoft might be interested in talking to the Canadians about a possible sale.

Both Samsung and RIM have not commented on the story, but it would certainly be a surprise if Samsung took a gamble on the ailing company.

However, in a rare piece of good news for RIM stockholders, company shares went up following reports that Samsung might be interested in a buyout.

Update: Samsung spokesperson James Chun responded to the rumours with a statement: "We haven't considered acquiring the firm and are not interested in (buying RIM)."

Samsung Galaxy S3 to come with all day battery?

Angry Bird marathon anyone?

The days when you feared for your mobile phone's life may be coming to an end, with Samsung announcing that all handsets released in 2012 will last all day on a single charge.

Kevin Packingham, VP of product innovation at Samsung, said in an interview with CNET that all handsets released this year will last from when you get up until you go to sleep, with moderate to heavy usage.

Across the board, mobile phone users always seem to have issues with battery life on their smartphones. As more and more technology is packed into devices, the demand on the battery becomes greater and greater.

In for the long haul

Battery issues on various handsets were highlighted last year, including the iPhone 4S (with iOS 5) and the Lumia 800, so we hope Samsung are leading the 'charge' in battery life, with others to follow suit.

Is Samsung's promise of one day good enough though? We still remember the days when mobile phones would last weeks, no matter how much Snake you played...

Samsung's Bada-Tizen merge on hold?

ZTE Tania: super-cheap Windows Phone announced

Hands on with the ZTE Tania

We've spent some time with the first handset to launch in 2012, and it's a budget option: the ZTE Tania, powered by Windows Phone.

The phone isn't the slimmest in the world at 10.7mm thick - although it's hardly chunky in the hand, and the plastic chassis has a more than robust feel.

It's rocking a 5MP camera with 512MB of RAM - but sadly you're limited to 4GB of onboard storage with no (current) possibility of expandable storage... this isn't a phone for media lovers.

Apple may bring Siri to older iPhones, iPad and iPod Touch

Siri - iPad bound?

Some text in the iOS 5.1.3 beta has led to speculation that Apple will bring Siri to additional iOS devices aside from the iPhone 4S.

While it's a no-brainer to expect that Siri will land on future devices like the iPhone 5 and the iPad 3 (or iPad 2S or iPad HD or whatever it is we're calling it these days), the text in question seems to point to backwards compatibility.

On the keyboard setting screen, iOS 5.1.3 on both the iPod Touch and iPad includes the line "About dictation link text" despite the fact that no handset but the iPhone 4S offers Siri Dictation.

Siri, kill me now

Now, Apple has already said there are no plans to bring Siri to its older iOS devices, but does the rumour mill believe it? Does it heck.

This latest development suggests to some that older handsets like the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPad 2 will get some parts of the Siri service (like dictation), but not the full Siri experience.

Of course, this could be nothing. Apple may simply be including a catch-all About page because it's been burned by privacy issues before. But it's Apple, so we had to tell you about it. It's the law.

Ofcom unveils plans for greater 4G coverage

4G is coming...

Ofcom has announced its plans for the forthcoming 4G spectrum auction in the UK following another consultation.

It has pledged to make sure that at least four operators are able to offer decent 4G services to ensure competition, while also looking at ways to provide mobile data to areas currently not serviced due to geographical constraints.

4G networks will offer much-enhanced data speeds and bandwidth once deployed and, thanks to the current switching off of analogue TV signals, there's now a whole heap of spectrum at the 800MHz band that Ofcom is planning to auction off to mobile operators at the end of 2012.

Windows Phone ditches the specs race

Microsoft: spec, schmeck

Microsoft, while never exactly seen as playing at the top end of the smartphone climbing frame, has confirmed that Windows Phone is not competing with other mobile devices on a spec-for-spec basis.

Speaking to The Verge, Microsoft's Joe Belfiore said that the user experience is more important in Windows Phone than cutting-edge specs or bargain-basement prices.

He said, "If you look at how we've built our team and the programme on Windows Phone we've really tried to focus our engineering efforts on a relatively narrow set of hardware so we can optimise it greatly.

"Over time, I think you can expect to see us expand the breadth of things we focus on. But for now, it's that narrower range."

Arms race

It's an Apple-style strategy, although Microsoft is sadly lacking in the apps and desirability departments, and it makes sense given the stranglehold Microsoft has over the OS's minimum tech requirements.

In fact, isn't it just Android manufacturers who are left playing the specs game? Apple does what it wants - sure, it could have come out with some kind of ridiculous mega-core iPhone 5 behemoth in last year if it had wanted to, but it wasn't ready so the company chose instead to focus on minor upgrades and usability features like Siri. But the iPhone 4S works, and that's the thing (just don't mention the battery...).

Meanwhile, Motorola, Samsung and HTC et al seem to be forever striving to the be thinnest, fastest, highest resolution, most number of cores, bassiest audio, best this, top that.

But what do most of us really want from a smartphone? You want it to look good, work properly, keep up with your fingers and for the battery life to last all day. And from that point of view, Windows Phone is doing all right.

2. On the contrary, my Lumia is the best phone I've had, outstripping the Android devices I've had in all respects. My iphone carrying sister is also looking to switch at the end of her contract.

It works, efficiently, smoothly and reliably. No lag, no freezes, no need to recharge if you dare to actually use the thing.

1. While I like the appoach from a user's point of view (I have the Samsung Omnia 7) I have to say that this is not an attitude that will boost sales.

In order to sell a product you need one or more USPs (unique selling points). Apple have their brand value (lucky them) and the Android phones, less focused in terms of brand but still featuring the Google-genes, have their high specs, which communicate very well. WP7.5, unfortunately carries the name 'windows' in it (no brand value at all) as well as having mediocre specs (screen resolution!!!!).

Analyst reckons Nokia sold 1m Lumia 800s in Q4

I'll take 37 million, please

Amid all the rumours of struggling sales and possible buy-outs, one analyst reckons Nokia shifted around one million Nokia Lumia 800 handsets in the last three months of 2011.

The estimation comes from research company Morgan Stanley, and isn't massively high given that Q4 is the quarter in which Christmas and its associated spending falls.

However, if accurate it means that Nokia has outstripped other analysts' predictions that it would shift only half a million units before the end of 2011.

Analysts all around

Morgan Stanley thinks the good times could be ahead, predicting that the Finns will sell a massive 37 million Windows Phone handsets throughout 2012.

This will come at the cost of the ailing Symbian OS, which could see its sales fall to around 40 million this year

Elop dismisses Nokia sale rumours again

Buttery biscuit baseless

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop has once again brushed off rumours that Nokia is set to sell its smartphone division to Microsoft.

The latest rumour, perpetrated by Nokia watcher Eldar Murtazin, spoke of Elop finalising a deal with Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer over CES and leaving Nokia before the sale went through.

Elop has responded by saying exactly what someone who was planning to see a smartphone division to Microsoft would say to throw people off the scent: "The rumours are baseless."

Oh please

He went on to zing Murtazin (without referencing him by name, of course), saying, "Some people who seem to enjoy generating rumours are running out of fresh material, so it seems to have come up again."

To back up his comments, Elop went on, "There's significant synergies between the multiple groups within Nokia - for example, on decisions around chipsets, on memory, on different display technologies. We gain scale advantages across the entire portfolio of devices that we have."

His argument is that this scale advantage and multi-departmental synergies make a sale to Microsoft a nonsensical option.

Sure, but if Nokia does sell its smartphone division to Microsoft we still won't be all that surprised.
